Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy – HBOT – involves breathing 100% (pure) oxygen while in a special space called a hyperbaric chamber. The air pressure inside is raised two to three levels higher than normal air pressure. The increased air pressure in the chamber helps the lungs to collect more oxygen. Increased oxygen in the tissues helps fight bacteria and stimulate the release of growth factors and stem cells, which promote the healing process.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized environment. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a well-established treatment for decompression sickness, a potential risk of scuba diving

Conditions that HBOT is essential include:

  • Serious infection cases
  • Bubbles of air in blood vessels
  • Wounds that may not heal because of diabetes or exposure to radiation
  • Severe anemia
  • Brain abscess / Traumatic brain injury
  • Burns
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Sudden deafness / sudden and painless blindness
  • Gangrene
  • Infection of skin or bone that causes tissue death

During therapy, the air pressure in the room is about 2 to 3 times higher than normal air pressure. The increased air pressure will create a temporary feeling of fullness in your ears. This is similar to what you might feel in an airplane or at a high elevation. You can relieve that feeling by yawning or swallowing.

Conditions that HBOT helps:

  • Alzheimer's
  • Cancer
  • Autism
  • Sports injuries
  • Arthritis
  • Epilepsy
  • Recovery after orthopedic operations and surgeries

Conditions in which HBOT is used recently:

  • Improving mental functions, increase focus, reducing depression, anxiety, and stress
  • Improving sleep quality
  • Improving the effects of aging through skin cells regeneration
  • Increasing athletes’ physical fitness
  • Treating chronic stress and fatigue
  • Increasing metabolism, which promotes health

Why HBOT is done

Body tissues need a sufficient supply of oxygen to function. When tissues is injured, it requires even more oxygen to survive. HBOT increases the amount of oxygen your blood can carry. With repeated treatments, the temporary extra high oxygen levels encourage normal tissue oxygen levels—even after the therapy is completed.

Before HBOT

The doctor will order a chest X-ray to check your health condition
For your safety, items such as lighters or battery-powered devices that generate heat are not allowed into HBOT unit. Your health care team will provide instruction on preparing you to undergo Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.

SAJAYA offers you a single HBOT unit (designated for one person) for more privacy and to avoid exposure to infection (which may occur when treating in a room with several people)

SAJAYA is the only place in the private sector that offers a private treatment unit dedicated to one person.

After HBOT

Your therapy team will check you after your session. A team member may look in your ears and take your blood pressure and pulse and if you have diabetes, your blood glucose is checked. Once the team decides you are ready, you can get dressed and leave.

You may feel tired or hungry following your treatment—but HBOT does not limit activities.

Risks

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is generally considered a safe procedure and side effects are rare.
